Richard Fiore Eugene J. Akers, Ph.D. | Senior Director

As the Senior Director of the Center for Advanced Technologies, Dr. Akers manages the center resources and consultant teams that focus on providing advanced information technology solutions to improve the knowledge and economic capabilities of private and public organizations in Alabama.  His responsibilities include business development, customer relationship, project management, and technology research.

Prior to joining the Center, Dr. Akers spent over 28 years in public administration in the states of Florida and Alabama.  Dr. Akers has over 37 years of experience in information technology in the private and public sectors.  Dr. Akers’ public sector experience included senior management of information technology departments in large agencies including criminal justice, revenue and finance.  Dr. Akers’ private sector experience included small business and large business technology management environments.  Dr. Akers has served on numerous boards and commissions associated with the strategic vision and management of information technology in the public sector.

Dr. Akers has a broad range of experience and responsibility dealing with many different facets of information technology including strategic planning, security management, digital government, telecommunications, application development, quality improvement, remittance processing, disaster recovery and business continuity, risk management, problem management and service centers, vendor management and IT procurement processes.

Tobias Mense | IT Consultant

Tobias Mense works with the Center for Advanced Technologies as an IT Consultant. Mr. Mense provides the center with extensive knowledge regarding IT needs.  

Prior to his current role at the Center, Mr. Mense served in an internship, advising businesses and government agencies on how best to use information technology to meet their business objective.  Prior to this, Tobias worked at the Auburn Montgomery Library in IT support, installing and maintaining local computer systems and advising staff in proper usage.  Additional career experience includes working as an IT System Trader, directing sales of phone and computer equipment and advising customers of T-Mobile Germany and T-Com Germany.  He also has experience with Deutsche Telekom AG buying and directing sales of new IT products, assembling and caluculating LANs for external companies with more than 30 servers, and advising customers on implementing server and data environments. 

 

Larkin Nolen | Consultant  
larkin.nolen@cat.aum.edu 

As a consultant for the Center, Larkin Nolen provides state agencies and private organizations with expertise in continuity of operation plans and is an expert in crisis management.  Mr. Nolen also has experience in security policy and procedure analysis with an emphasis on security, privacy, and potential HIPAA exposures. 

In addition, he has conducted market research in Internet deployment for several information technology companies to achieve competitive advantages and improved customer satisfaction.  Larkin also has experience in working as a consultant and expert witness in information systems litigation. 

Prior to joining the Center, Mr. Nolen worked as the Chief Informaiton Officer for the State of Alabama.  He also developed, managed and implemented marketing programs, educational courses and provided team leadership for IBM for 29 years. 

Mr. Nolen has a Masters of Science Electrical Engineering from Auburn University.  He has also completed the Government Leadership Series with Harvard University as well as Key Executive Technology School, a program of MIT and Harvard University.

 

Brandon Johnson | Research Assistant

Brandon Johnson currently works with the Center as a Research Assistant.  In this role, he assists in the planning and execution for IT projects with private businesses and government entities.  His work at the Center includes projects for the Alabama Forestry Commssion, the Department of Homeland Security and Medicaid.   

Prior to joining the Center, Mr. Johnson worked as a Computer Services Assistant for Auburn Montgomery.  He also worked with the Department of Student Affairs as Assistant Director of the Campus Activities Board.  In addition, Brandon works at Sam's Club as an Electronic Department Sales Representative.  

Mr. Johnson is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems at Auburn Montgomery.  His expected graduation date is December 2009. 

 

Treasa Ndolo Treasa Ndolo | Administrative Associate

Treasa Ndolo comes from Regions Bank with over six years of experience in the area of customer services and support.  Ms. Ndolo serves as the Office Administrator and is responsible for handling daily administrative, personnel, contract and purchasing duties.
